The History and Geology of the Scarborough Bluffs

· Scarborough, ON M1M 3W3, Canada

This walking tour explores the human and natural history of the Scarborough Bluffs. Historically known as "Les Grands Ecores" and the "High Lands," the site was named the Scarborough Highlands by Elizabeth Simcoe in 1793 because of its resemblance to English chalk cliffs, though it consists primarily of sand. The tour covers the geological formation of the cliffs, the ongoing effects of erosion, and the historical loss of shoreline area due to urban and industrial expansion along Lake Ontario.
